SiteWorx File Manager Tutorial
This tutorial discusses how to manage the files on
your server using SiteWorx. For all examples in this
tutorial, if you'd like to apply the changes to several
files, simply check more than one file or folder in
the file listing.
Quick Index
Overview
The SiteWorx File Manager provides you with an easy-to-use
system for complete management of all aspects of your
domain's files. This includes creating and deleting
files, creating and deleting directories, editing and
moving files, moving folders and changing permissions
on files and folders.
You may access the File Manager at any time, simply
by clicking on the "File Manager" option in the Left
Control Panel Menu:
The result of clicking this button is the File Manager
screen, similar to that depicted below:
Following is an overview of common SiteWorx File
Manager tasks:
Uploading a File
Apart from using an FTP program, the File Manager
gives you an easy, graphical way to upload a file to
your webspace.
- Once you have logged into SiteWorx and clicked
on the File Manager button, you can now click on
the 'Upload' link in the 'Tools' menu, as depicted
below:
- The result of clicking on this link is the screen
depicted below, which provides us with the ability
to add a new file to our webspace.
- We now need to find the file that we would like
to upload by clicking on the 'Browse' button. This
will popup a new window used to locate your file.
- Once you've found the file that you'd like to upload,
press the 'Open' button. This will place the location
of the file on your computer into the field next
to the browse button:
- Now we need to select the necessary options for
uploading this file. There are 3 options for uploading
the file; The "Transfer mode" (1), the "File name
as:" (2), and the "Overwrite" option:
- We have 3 choices when it comes to choosing the
transfer mode. We can choose Auto, ASCII, or Binary.
Each of these depends on what kind of file you're
uploading. All image files should be uploaded in
Binary mode and most files containing text should
be uploaded in ASCII mode. To be safe, we'll keep
Auto mode selected.
- We also have 3 choices when it comes to choosing
the "File name as" option. We can choose default,
uppercase or lowercase. Choose default to leave your
file named as it is, choose uppercase to have your
file renamed in all uppercase letters and choose
lowercase to have your file renamed in all lowercase
letters.
- The last option is the "Overwrite" option. With
this box checked, when we upload our file, if there
is already a file with the same name, it will be
overwritten with the new file. If we don't check
this box and try to upload a file that already exists,
the file will not be uploaded and we'll receive a
notification saying the file already exists.
- Once you've chosen your options, click the 'Upload'
button to place the file on your webserver. Once
the file has been uploaded, the file listing in the
center will refresh, showing your new file on the
server.
- If you'd like to upload more than one file at
a time, you need to click the "Multiple Upload" link:
- Once you've clicked on that link, the center file
listing will refresh showing several fields in which
to browse for files. Repeat steps 3 through 9 in
order to upload several files at once.
Deleting a File or Folder
SiteWorx File Manager also gives you the ability
to delete files and folders that are no longer necessary.
Keep in mind that once you've deleted the file there
is no way to recover it, so delete with caution.
- We'll start out on the main page of the File Manager.
You should see the screen below:
- Locate the file or folder you would like to delete
to click the checkbox to the left of the filename.
- Now that you've got your file selected, click
the 'Delete' link in the 'Commands' menu at the bottom:
- You should now see a popup window asking you if
you'd really like to delete this file. Click 'OK'.
Note: If you are deleting a folder
that still has files inside of it, you will be
taken to a page asking if you want to remove
the files inside the folder as well. If you do,
click the 'Remove' or 'Remove all' buttons, if
not, click the 'Skip' or 'Cancel' buttons.
- The file listing in the middle of the window will
refresh and your file will now be gone. You will
also see a message at the bottom telling you that
your file has been removed.
Creating a File or Folder
There are times when you would like to create a new
file or folder on your webspace. These steps teach
you how to create a new file and a new folder on your
webspace.
- Starting out on the main File Manager screen,
click the 'New File' link in the 'Tools' menu at
the top.
- You will now see a field asking you for the name
of your new file, and a space below that to enter
the content of your new file. Fill out these fields
according to your preferences.
- Once you've entered all your content, click the
'Save Document' button at the top of the page.
- Your new file will now be saved with the name
you gave it and be visible in your file listing.
You will also see a message at the bottom telling
you that your file has been created.
- If you're looking to create a new folder, you
need to click on the 'New Dir' link in the 'Tools'
menu at the top of the File Manager.
- Enter the name of your new directory in the field
at the bottom of your screen.
- Click the 'Create' button to create your new directory.
You should now see the new directory in your file
listing and a message at the bottom telling you that
your new folder has been created.
Editing a File
When you need to change the content of your file,
the File Manager makes it easy. You can choose which
file you'd like to edit, edit your file, and save the
file all within your browser. The File Manager even
has a toolbar on the editing screen that will change
the text style for you and convert it to HTML when
you save the file.
- From the main File Manager screen, locate the
file you'd like to edit and check the box to the
left of the filename.
- Once your file is selected, click the 'Edit' link
in the 'Commands' menu at the bottom.
- You should now be on the WYSIWYG(What You See
Is What You Get) editor. Make the necessary changes
to your file. If you'd like to edit the file using
RAW text, click the 'Switch to text' button in the
top right corner of the editing window.
- Once you've made changes to your file, you have
two choices. You can either click the 'Save' button
to save your file and return to the file listing,
or enter a new file name in the field next to the
'Save as' button and then click the 'Save as' button
to save your file under a new name. This will also
return you to the file listing window but you should
now see the new file you've just created.
- If you've saved the file under a new file name,
you should now see your new file in the file listing.
Moving a File or Folder
Sometimes you may find that you need to move a file
or folder to a new place. Instead of downloading the
file, switching directories and then uploading the
file to a new location, File Manager will allow you
to simply move a file or folder to a new location.
- From the main File Manager window, select the
file or folder that you'd like to move to a new location
by click on the checkbox to the left of the file
or folder name.
- Next, click the 'Move' link in the 'Commands'
menu at the bottom.
- The bottom window will refresh and ask you to enter
the path to where you'd like to move the file to.
This can be a folder in the directory that you're
currently in, or the path to a folder you'd like
to move the files to. Once you've entered a location,
click the 'Move' button to move the file.
- You should now noticed that the file you moved
is no longer in the file listing and the bottom screen
tells you that the move was successful.
- If you'd like to double check to make sure that
your file or folder was moved to the correct location,
navigate to the folder you moved them to and you
should see the file or folder in the file listing.
Also note, when moving a folder to a new location,
the folder AND all the files in the folder will be
moved.
Changing Permissions on a File or Folder
Often when installing PHP or CGI scripts, you may
be asked to CHMOD or change the permissions on certain
files or folders. File Manager gives you an easy way
to accomplish this.
- From the main File Manager screen, select the
file or folder that you'd like to change the permissions
on by checking the box to the left of the file or
folder name.
- Once you have your file or folder selected, click
the 'CHMOD' link in the 'Commands' menu at the bottom.
- You now have 3 options to choose from when setting
your file permissions. You can set your permissions
using the number, i.e. 777, 0777, 644, 0644, or using
the checkboxes next to the letters, i.e. RWXRWXRWX,
RWXRWXRWXRWX, RWRR, RWXRWRR. You also have the 'Recursive'
checkbox, which, when changing file permissions on
a folder, allows you to change permissions on that
folder and all files and folders within the folder
at the same time. For more information on file permissions,
check out the chmod
command on google.
- Once you've set the correct permissions for your
file or folder, click the 'CHMOD' button to apply
the permissions. You should now noticed that the
letter groupings on the end of the line containing
your file name have changed according to the permissions
you set on that file. The bottom also displays a
message saying the permissions have been changed.
